According to an article on Forbes.com “Remote workers — overwhelmingly — feel they’re more productive: According to the survey, 91% of remote workers believe they “get more work done when working remotely,” compared to only 9% who feel they don’t.  While it’s worth noting this is an employee self-assessment (as opposed to managers’ assessments), the large margin here does seem significant.”

In addition to the work location, millenniums want to be involved in the goal setting of the business.

A great way to have good communications with Millennials is to have open communications. Share with them the financials, the P&L statements, your vision, your balance sheet, inventory and vendor challenges. The more open you are with them, the more engaged they will be to be part of the sustainability, profitability and success of your business. It also helps to have a strategy that centers on the criteria of Plan, Direct and Control for effective leadership and collaboration with all of your team.

How do I start my own business?



Jack Mencini and Adam Sonnhalter co-hosts of Dirt Secrets of Small Business and business owners themselves with Maximum Value Partners (MVP) (www.maximumvp.com) tackle the difficult HOW question this week of: How do I start my own business?

Jack was recently at a family event when one of his relatives, who is a licensed massotherapist shared with him that she was thinking of starting her own business and wanted insight on how to do this. She is currently working for someone else and is trying to get advice from many different sources including family members. (Spoiler alert – many family members may not have a clue on how to go about starting a business.) Talking to Jack was a good first step, but not a short conversation that could provide a solution while the chip dip is being passed.

A good first step, which Jack advised is to get a good definition of what her products and services will be. As simple as that sounds, most people don’t do this well, especially early on. This type of definition quickly leads into the types of people who would want that type of product or service, also known as the target market. Adam also offered a key insight to have Jenny ask herself, “Is my product or service good enough that I can give it away and people will want it?” The premise being that if you can’t even give it away, you might not have the right product or service to start a business.

Jack’s relative was also considering something that is another common mistake, going into business with a friend. In this case, the friend is also a massotherapist who doesn’t know anything about business. Partners can be good when they each bring different things to the partnership. What typically happens in a case like this is that they’ve now doubled the number of mouths they need to feed and will ultimately lead to stress on the business and the friendship. We encourage folks who are just starting out to focus hard on getting their first customers. If you can’t get people to pay for your product or service, it doesn’t make sense to take the plunge and get into that business.

“If the email isn’t like a building burning down, you can answer it in 24 hours,” recommends Jack. “This will help you to focus on what is really important and not eat up your day trying to manage the ever exploding inbox.”

How to Collect Money?

For today’s show/podcast, the topic started with the example from one of their MVP clients who asked How do I become more approachable?

The owner of this company was a pretty big guy physically and he could be imposing and loud when he talked. His wife asked MVP how he could be more approachable so his employees would feel more comfortable discussing work issues and opportunities with him. He cared about his employees, but recently, two employees were looking to leave almost back-to-back. The two employees had talked to his wife who was part of the business rather than go to him. The owner knew he had a challenge, but didn’t know how to solve it.

The employees did not feel comfortable going to him because of his imposing stature. The owner wanted to solve this problem (he was actually a teddy bear at heart) and asked Jack and Adam what he should do?

Some practical tips the MVP coaches gave him were: smile more often and be more self-deprecating. Make it a genuine smile though and practice it if you have to so that it is relaxed and natural. Show that you enjoy what you are doing. Being self-deprecating brings out the human side. Try using the phrase “I’m confused.” Stay humble.

You’re Always Working!

No, they aren’t talking turkey, but rather stuffing as it relates to all the stuff small business owners have to contend with.

In this week’s show, they debunk the common myth that centers on “I told them once, so they should get it.” Nearly every owner goes through this with his or her team of employees in being challenged on how to communicate effectively. Directions and insights that seem crystal clear to the owner can often take 2 or 3 or even dozens of times to explain so team members really get it. To the owner, it feels like you are babysitting at times or even dealing with a very young child. Keep in mind that communication is very difficult and what may be inherently clear in your mind might not be so clear when presented to your team. Your team members usually have different backgrounds and experience so it might be that you’re using words that you think are very clear but have a different meaning to your team. We see it all the time when discussing numbers and using terms like profit, which is totally clear to us, but most people don’t see what we see. If you get a lot of blank stares or think that your people have taken on the look of a deer in the headlights, maybe it’s time to examine how well you are communicating the back-story of what you need to be implemented.

A great thing to do is pause and have your team feed back to you what they just heard so that you can ensure you’re on the same page. If you aren’t on the same page, you’ll quickly be able to identify where the confusion exists.

Good Partners Are Hard to Find, But Invaluable When You Find One!

Not having to argue and increase stress with your business partner will bode well for the success and profitability of your business.

The MVP coaches also debunk the myth that your business will be profitable in the first six to twelve months when the new business is starting up. According to Adam, most people think of this in terms of them being able to take money out of the business. It’s the old job versus owner mentality. Running a business is not like being employed within an organization, working for someone else and having a job. Running a business needs to focus on growing and feeding the business first with investments of the owner’s savings and/or incurring debt to keep cash flowing into the business. Jack and Adam are saying that in some unusual cases, new businesses can be profitable early on, but in most cases, either the business owner or the spouse still has their job to keep things a float before jumping in 100% and not having another salary as a safety net.

Your Banker Can Help You If You Help Him Help You

In these discussions, it is really good to describe and emphasize the positive situations and the next steps you are building for profit and sustainability. It is also a good idea to have discussions with your banker on updates before you need the money so that the banker has the back-story of your goals and vision for the business. That’s right, go to your banker BEFORE you need the money.

Jack also interjected that it is critical that the business owner learn how to effectively present the numbers for the business. Also, with banks continuing to make changes to personnel and the way they make decisions in the processing of money for a small business, it is important for the owner to have an understanding of the bank’s current process. Often times, this insight can help an owner in asking for more money initially rather than having to go back numerous times if more funds are needed. In this week’s myth, they debunk the idea that success is all about making money. If You Don’t Like People, You Shouldn’t Be A Business Owner



MVP guys in the studioMany of us have heard about Dale Carnegie. He was one of the first quasi business coaches who wrote the book over 60 years ago: How to Wind Friends & Influence People. It is still relevant today and it comes down to making people feel respected and appreciated. Dale Carnegie along with Jack Mencini and Adam Sonnhalter of Maximum Value Partners are very like-minded in having similar ideas of how business owners should deal with their teams and what it takes to be a good leader.

In this week’s dirty secret, Jack and Adam who host of the Dirty Secrets of Small Business™ show, uncover the fact that as a small business owner, if you don’t like people, you shouldn’t be a business owner! Nearly every business owner spends the largest part of their time dealing with people “stuff.” If people aren’t your thing and Dale Carnegie’s philosophies never hit home with you, chances are you won’t have too much fun owning a business. Is it because they are afraid of not looking like they are not in control by knowing everything or is it because a great fault of leaders usually has them talking 80% of the time and only listening 20% of the time? Sometimes what should take days takes weeks; what should take weeks takes months and what should take months sometimes takes years… all because different challenges enter in when you are running your own business. You, as the owner, think you have the best-laid plans until a crisis comes up, inventory is down, an employee doesn’t show up or you have a personal family issue. You have plans and a direction in mind, but don’t kid yourself that everything will go smoothly 100% of the time.

Another myth of small businesses is that you will have more time to spend with family and friends. Jack and Adam have owned and operated 20 companies of their own and have coached hundreds of business owners on how to develop their small businesses and how to plan and direct their time.
